Twitter Shitlist Lottery – All this week!

Here’s how it works, as I was explaining to Kevin in the car (and he said I should turn this into a blog post).  Basically I have followed too many people who I once found interesting, but over time have become social media douchebags.

  • I open Twitter.com or Tweetdeck
  • I read the most recent tweet from someone I’m following, and click the link no matter what
  • If it sucks, I unfollow you

What is a social media douchebag, you ask?

Or this…

I guess the easiest way not to “win” this lottery is to not post any links this week.

I find this an interesting way to manage the data flood. I’m really interested in this topic lately so pardon me while I ask way too many questions:

Are you really going to be that black and white or will you apply some context to it? If someone has a history of providing mostly high value links will you still give them a pass this week? Are there people that are already on your shit list that you’re already thinking about unfollowing?

It seems almost impossible to not share one link that doesn’t meet your standard when some people share 5+ links a day. Maybe it’s how you define “sucks”?

Hmmm… well I didn’t really give it that much thought, but I admit I have been militant about it this week. I kind of trust that people who generate value in general aren’t going to post crap – and if they do and I unfollow them then I anticipate re-following when I come across them again. I especially appreciate the person who @replied me with a rickroll, I actually followed him because it was clever.

I am so overwhelmed with Twitter right now, it’s tempting to just unfollow everyone (but that would be a lot of clicks). It’s a good thing there isn’t a “purge” button or there would probably be a lot of those “goodbye cruel world” tweets, kind of like what people would post before deleting their LiveJournals (back in the day). And then bring them back 3 weeks later, but I digress…

The people already on my shit list… I’m not even that organized, although I know I am following a lot of people that I need to get around to unfollowing. I really like TweetSum for unfollowing people, but it doesn’t reliably work anymore (it was just a Startup Weekend project).

Mostly it’s in how I define sucks, and the bar is pretty low. I am able to appreciate dorky pictures, crass videos, etc. What I find really annoying are poorly finessed sales pitches and the giant sucking sound of so-called social media experts. Sounds like a follow-up blog post might be in order :)

Thanks for humoring me. I agree that SM in general is very overwhelming right now. Filtering is a painfully difficult process and managing conversations across all the various channels is even worse.
    Definitely sounds like another post.
