>>
People are storytellers...
>>

And we are meaning makers -- folks who look for ongoing memes/threads/sagas/yadas that we can jump into (or that already surround us).

One of the reasons my 6 year old daughter sings along to high school musical word for word is that she wants to be a part of princess stories (for better or worse ;)

Reminds me of this intro by MacDonald to "The Princess and the Goblin" --

http://bit.ly/rgra

My understanding is that Middle Earth and Narnia likely would not have existed (at least in the forms that we know them) without George's influence.

Great analysis. It's about the desire, or need, to create. It's about having something that, as you say, can outlive the person.
How many people can see an impact from their jobs? The thing they spent most of the their time on often makes no individual statement. The things people do as part of a team may be important, but there is no stamp of, "I did that."
The creative lengths people go to now may well be a response to that. Whether it's the drive to tell stories, or something bigger, we now have the tools to make that happen.
It let's people exercise different parts of their brain. And it let's people simply have fun.
And I hope Disney doesn't come after the Lip Dubbers.

It's less narcissism than play. I did the same thing to vinyl records when I was a kid. This is definitely a step up because you can choreograph, costume, and direct. A fun exploration of creativity and using imagination to try on different personas.
