Thanks for this post. Wish I had read it years ago and glad to know that I am not the only one with the perspective or the experience. I am definitely of the great generalist variety and wore many of the hats you described. Since many of those companies turned about to be zombies, not much to show for it financially but it does make for a great story and I do have my eyes and ears open for "what good / better / great looks like" ...

I am definitely of the great generalist variety and wore many of the hats you described.
Thank you for writing this. I am a startup marketer and have in more than one occasion felt like the maid. I am working building a company that will encourage mutual respect between marketer and engineer through knowledge sharing, education and eventually community. Would love to do a discovery session with you if you can 15 min .

Basically being able to set things straight by knowing what you are wanting,
what you are able to do when meeting your goals and who you are willing to deal with.
What do employees of Federal Reserve Banks do all day.
But its very existence under the shadows of Chandigarh does not do much harm to its unique identity.

I rarely leave comments but for the hell of it cut-and-pasting what I added to my FB post when I shared it just now....One
of the best posts I've read in a very long time. Yes, start-ups that
put engineering first over everyone else are doomed for a terrible
defeated and segmented culture. I've seen it from the outside and lived
it from the inside. The view of some of these CEO's - and their lack of
respect of key company functions - are indicative to inexperience and
limitations of running tiny-tiny-tiny companies. Let's see one
of them turn their hot-shit echo chamber hype bubble company into one
that has 500 or even 5,000 employees and hold the same attitude that
marketing, communications, sales, "PR" blah blah fucking blah isn't a
core competency. That engineering is the only king. You can build all
the awesome products you want but if no one knows about them, how to use
them, etc. you're doomed. A good CEO and management team knows how to
UNITE a company, not create division and play favorites. Unfortunately,
those are few and far between.
