Google Analytics Says “You Kick Ass”

Well, it doesn’t actually say that.  However, I’m feeling pretty proud of the increase in traffic to this blog in the month of October.  Since I’ve been sharing how this is going all along I figure why not keep telling you how many uniques I’m getting.  It’s kind of interesting, if you love data like I do.

AND we’ve still go a few more hours before the month of October is over so maybe I can up my traffic just a tiny bit more and then I’ll officially have tripled my unique visitors from last month.  That’s right, I said triple. Now you see why I’m so happy – I only need 21 more uniques today and I’ll have tripled from 232 uniques last month to 696 this month.  Yay!

Living Large by Living Small

Like most in the startup community, I’ve been following (how could you miss it) the various media coverage of the economic downturn and contemplating what it means to me both as the employee of a startup and as an aspiring entrepreneur.  Here’s what I have to offer for your contemplation, as I continue mine.

Some favorite song lyrics by Onelinedrawing for “Livin Small” come to mind:

These dreams’ll raise you up
Some kids wanna be rockstars, and some kids wanna be firemen

But those dreams’ll mess you up
If you’re in it for the bright lights and the battle scars
It’ll turn you into a liar, man

I don’t know if I’ve seen a million faces
I’m not sure if I’ve rocked them all
All I know is I’ve met a lot of people
Filled a lot of spaces
Learned to jump and learned to take a fall
And if that’s not livin’ large, then
I’m happy livin’ small

Well, most of us, when we go out looking,
as we do, for our lovers and our friends
Yea, we know it’s not just supposed to
be about what looks good
We know it’s not really all about the benjamins
Yea, but business is a lot like love and
business is a lot like friendship, isn’t it?
Yea, well either way, if you just go out
looking for what’s rich and hot
You’ll end up with a piece of shit

I don’t know if I’ll make a million dollars
Yea who knows, maybe if I return those calls…
All I know is when I tune in,
turn on and go out
It’s not my radio
It’s not my tv show
It’s not my rock-n-roll
Looks like one big fashion show
All these punk rock pimps and hoes
Sellin’ this and sellin’ those
Sodas, cars and phones
I mean, what’s the dilly, yo?
This channel isn’t clear at all
And if that’s what passes these days for livin’ large
Then I’m happy livin’ small.

Jonah playing this song live, in a living room (wish I had been there):

D&D Episode 1: Move-In & the First Week

It’s been a week since D’Laina moved in with us, and I’ve been slacking on getting this first video of move-in to you guys.  Sorry for the poor quality of the footage, getting a better camera (with zoom!) soon.  Without further ado:

Our Friendship is About Food

We’ve been to Denice’s Place TWICE for breakfast since she moved in (last Sunday morning and again yesterday).  I tried to make hummus with our many cans of garbanzo beans, but it was too lemony and we ended up throwing it out.  However, I made up for the hummus debacle with a batch of cookie dough straight from the original Joy of Cooking recipe.  D’Laina cooked Kevin, Don, my Dad, and I delicious chicken and prawn scampi on Thursday night; and last night she concocted a new drink. JD and Coke, and then rum when you forget you’ve already got whiskey in there.  Yuck?  Yum?  Well, she drank it!

D’Laina Joins the Revolution – Gets An iPhone

What was supposed to be a short trip to Bellevue Square Mall to replace my lost iPhone became an adventure when D’Laina decided to buy one.  Seriously, do they put something in the air or subliminal messages in the music in the Apple Store?

Much to the chagrin of her boyfriend (a loyal Blackberry user) she’s now converted to an Apple customer and iPhone user with her new black 16GB iPhone.  I love that she says to me, “Looks like I’ve joined the revolution”.  Yep.

Craving Hummus

After my failure to produce edible hummus on Wednesday, I’d been craving it.  After the iPhone adventure we decided to visit Orexi (a greek place in Bellevue) and, as usual, I ordered WAY too much food.

It’s Official – I’m the Events Editor at Seattle 2.0

You might have noticed I have been posting as frequently here as in the past, and in part that’s because my attention has been diverted to writing posts for Seattle 2.0 as the events editor.  Marcelo Calbucci, who runs Seattle 2.0, has brough together a team of contributors and we’re on a schedule to generate at least one new post a day for the Seattle 2.0 blog.  In addition to this content, posts from Seattle tech blogs are aggregated in on the front page.

As the events editor it is my job to cover events taking place in the Seattle tech community, with a particular focus on startups.  I go to events, write about what happened there, who I met, what I learned, and what an individual should expect to get out of the event.  I also will be featuring various community organizers as they talk about the events they host; everything from how they plan to what their vision is for the future of the Seattle tech community.

Check out my first three posts:

Of course, I’d love to receive feedback on how I can make my posts interesting and useful so if you want to reach me please leave a comment with a valid email address and we’ll talk.

D&D Show – First Episode on Saturday

Well it’s official, D’Laina is moving in with me on Saturday and I am so excited to get her all settled in.  I know, where’s the Vegas post?  I’m on it.

More importantly, I’ve got two major action items I’ve been neglecting:

  • Are we just going to call this the “D&D Show” or is there a better name?
  • What kind of digital camera should I get?

I’m guessing the Saturday show will just be segments from making the move, hopefully with some cool music.  If you happen to know of anyone interested in getting some exposure (some… maybe…) by having their music on our show please leave it in the comments or email me.

What’s the Point?

If you’re new to my blog (ahem – all 40 of you, but thats 4x last month so I’m happy) you might not already have heard that my husband is headed to China for a four month assignment for work, starting in mid-November.  D’Laina, my best friend (really hot, not a geek *yet*, hilariously funny) is moving in with me so that I don’t lose my mind being alone in our house.  We’re going to have a great time, and live those “college years” I never had.  Some of it will wind up on camera.

That’s the whole premise, really simple and perhaps a bit silly – but I love video editing and I’m sure we’ll have some blog-worthy material in there.  As you may already know, I have a quirky (think Lisa Kudrow in friends) sense of humor just begging to be unleashed on the internet.
